Aadya- Born in style At Cloudnine

Happiness was brimming from all corners in our world when I got to know that I was pregnant. We chose Cloudnine as our maternity & birthing home as I believed that it was the perfect place to welcome our baby in style. Our doctor, Dr. Leela Bhagavan, kept us up-to-date at all our appointments about the growth and other minor complications regarding my pregnancy.

The drama began On May 9th 2012, when I discovered I had spotting and had still a little over a month to go before my due date. I rushed from work for an emergency checkup, where Dr. Leela Bhagavan coolly informs me that I was in labour. Initially I was in complete state of shock as I thought this can’t be happening or that it must be a false alarm. I told Dr. Bhagavan “I’m not yet ready for this baby” to which she replied with a smile “But the baby is ready for you”. I didn’t know where to begin, my bags weren’t packed, mentally I was a month behind, my work place wasn’t informed, my mother needed  to come over, and so on and so forth. I was advised complete bed-rest, and asked to return to the hospital when the contractions increased.

My water broke after a day and I was rushed to the hospital. This time, although partially prepared, I was greeted by Dr. Bhagavan with a smile saying “welcome back”, as she had predicted I was in labour and would deliver in 2 days’ time. I was at awe of her accuracy, experience and knowledge. At this point I completely gave in to her advice and instructions, fully aware that I would be having a preterm baby in a couple of hours.

Our little baby doll was born on 11th May 2012 through a normal delivery - healthy and beautiful. She was 35 weeks and 5 days weighing a little over 2 kilos.  However she was kept under observation in the NICU for a few days. By God’s grace, family support and an army of highly qualified, experienced doctors, nurses and other supporting staff, she was safely taken care of by Cloudnine team.

Dr. Leela Bhagavan, proved to be “Bhagavan” for us, bringing our “Puttani Rani” safely into our world in style. We were so overwhelmed with all the events that happened within a matter of a day. I could not have asked for a better mother’s day gift!

Today our daughter, who we have aptly named “AADYA”, meaning someone who is always ahead, completes her first year and according to Dr. Nandini Nagar, has caught up with babies her age clearing all milestones and more. We are extremely proud and happy to be associated with Cloudnine and thank them for a warm and memorable experience.

Chikkimamma’s Home Coming
Chicklet is what we called her when we knew we were having a girl during my neuchal scan. Chikkimamma is what we call her now because she is so much more gorgeous and so much naughtier now that she is out of her wombspa. She is an absolute joy – our Chikkimamma.
We live in Papua New Guinea (PNG), a beautiful South Pacific country, north of Australia. Lack of efficient and effective medical services meant, we had to seek out a Gynecologist/Obstetrician in Australia. Found the wonderful Dr. Christopher Price in Brisbane. Our Chicklet was safe in her wombspa knowing that Dr. Price was only a 3 hrs flight away. Chicklet became a frequent flyer right from the time she was conceived. We travelled to Brisbane every month for consultations and the necessary scans. We also travelled to Japan, South Korea, Phillipines, Thailand in the months preceding her birth. And the certified crazy parents-to-be that we were, we got a scan done in every port!
By the end of the 2nd trimester, we began our search for the perfect hospital. It had to be nothing but perfect for our Chicklet’s “homecoming.” We ruled out Australia because we wanted our wonderful family to be part of Chicklet’s birth – she was the second grandchild after 14 years – very very special! We researched and got to know of a few gynecologists Bangalore and Delhi – the two places that we decided on.
Delhi proved to be a colossal disappointment. We felt very uncomfortable with the gyne we sought an appointment with. The hospital, she said, the birth would take place, was appalling. Mind you, this was one of the premier private facilities in that city!
We then left for Bangalore within three days of our arrival in India. My elder sister had already sought an appointment with Dr. Prathima Reddy at Cloudnine, Jayanagar . We had got enough time to check out everything – the doctor and the facilities. Keeping all our fingers and toes crossed, we met Dr. Reddy at Cloudnine on December 27, 2011. We knew we had chosen well, very very well. Loved Dr. Reddy and loved the facilities. The smart PRO explained everything patiently to us and showed us around. We booked and confirmed that day. No regrets whatsoever!
I started dilating and bleeding towards the end of my 33rd week. Dr. Reddy promptly made a hospital arrest and put me under observation. Within two days of being admitted, I was told to be prepared for Chicklet’s journey out of her wombspa. A natural delivery (unfortunately) was ruled out because Chiklet was in breech. Phoned Shiv, who was back in PNG to reach Bangalore and “planned” for a February 4, Saturday, 2012 birth. Why? Because Saturday was the day both Shiv and I were born. And since February 2 is Shiv’s birthday, we decided for a different birthday for Chiklet. I was impressed when Shiv arrived within 24 hrs!
Ha! Our little darling made sure that we never ever take her for granted. She also made sure that her ‘Type A’ Mamma learns to not “plan” everything. I started bleeding on the morning of February 2. Dr. Reddy promptly asked the super efficient, super wonderful nurses to prepare me for the OT. I would lie if I say I wasn’t nervous. I was nervous because my planning did not work out! The next 2 hrs was very exciting. Scrubbed, shaved, sanitized, I was bundled into a wheelchair and into the OT. The calm, confident presence of Dr. Reddy was reassuring. With her were Dr. Girish, Neonatologist and Dr. Gujar, Anesthetist and a small army of very efficient looking nurses. Shiv and I knew we had nothing to worry about. Very soon Dr. Reddy took out our darling from her wombspa. Missy did not like it one bit. Her frown said, “Mamma, why am I being hung like a wet nappy. Why can you not take me in your arms!”
I am telling the truth – that little person actually looked into my eyes, when, after being cleaned and bundled up she was brought to me, and seemed to say, “You seem ok, my Mamma and I know I am going to love you as much as you love me.” Our love affair was cemented – for life! I felt miserable that I could not hold her in my arms as she was taken to the NICU for monitoring. Shiv was asked if he wanted to stay back at the OT. “Of course not! My new love is that little person and with her I shall be.” The Daddy knew his heart has been captured by our beautiful Chiklet and held tightly in her little hands.
She had arrived 6 weeks early and weighed 2.01 kg. By God’s grace, she was healthy and hearty. Within a day she was discharged from the NICU and was in our arms, in our room.
Sister Ruth, the super smart head of the nursing station made sure I started breastfeeding as soon as possible. My breasts were touched, squeezed, patted, squeezed some more…in an attempt to get Mother Dairy (as my elder sis put it) up and running.
It was so reassuring at Cloudnine – right from the dedicated, efficient and competent nurses, to their boss lady, Sr Ruth, to the doctors, and the facilities per se. I was treated, not as a pregnant cow and Shiv as a mere sperm donor, as we have seen in too many places in India, but as special people on a journey of their lifetime. Details like ante natal and post natal classes, breastfeeding sessions post delivery, to the nutritious, wholesome meals, to having a nurse visit us at home after discharge to ensure we are learning the nuances of taking care of an infant – every aspect in the entire value chain was a fantastic, relaxing and a very pleasant experience.
Naysa Sanaz, as our little Chikkimamma is 14 months old now. Naysa (meaning “Miracle of God” in Hebrew) and Sanaz (meaning “Full of Grace” in Persian) could not have been a more apt name for her. She is the answer to all our prayers, a graceful, joyful, generous, strong, brave and so incredibly kind little person. Shiv and I are becoming better human beings, every day, because in Naysa we have a wonderful teacher. There are days when the going gets tough. There are days when she is so infuriating, so exhausting, so exasperating, but a smile from her (and they are in abundance) makes everything so worth it. Her sense of humour never fails to amaze us. Already a frequent traveler, her sense of adventure, observation and curiosity is incredible for a person so young. She loves to eat and try different flavors and dishes. She has had beef, croc, emu, kangaroo and chicken and has made clear never to give her emu and kangaroo again!
Shiv and I feel blessed to have her in our lives and are forever grateful to the Cloudnine team for the wonderful experience of her journey from her wombspa to her home. We have been in touch with Dr. Prathima, Kishore and Girish and would love to continue our relationship. One day we hope to take Naysa to meet them all – and to Cloudnine where she was born.

Our little bundle of joy!!

Pregnancy is the best occasion of life and motherhood is the best virtue for any woman.

Pregnancy is the only time when with increased weight, scars and marks, swelled feet you look pretty and glamorous because you are nurturing a life inside you. I enjoyed this phase last year when we were expecting our first child in Dec 2012.

I was very particular in choosing the apt birthing facilities for my baby and we made our choice Cloudnine (OAR branch). Dr. Sita Rajan was my consulting obstetrician. Things went very well till my 7th month. Complications crept in when suddenly my blood pressure became very high. Dr. Rajan put me on Antihypertensive medicines. But with time, it kept on rising so much that my dosage became 460mg/day. Dr. Rajan declared that I am having “Pregnancy induced hypertension” and suggested me for complete bed rest. Sonography reports said that baby weight is low and baby growth is restricted. My gestation became the so called “High risk pregnancy”.This was a real tense moment for us. Dr. Rajan rushed me to emergency C-Section as soon as I completed my 37 week of pregnancy to avoid further worsening of situation.

We were blessed with our daughter on 03 Dec 2012. She was born with a very low birth weight (LBW) of 1.98 kgs. Due to LBW, she was shifted to NICU for observation as her blood sugar level was falling and she needed to be fed artificially. She was admitted under Dr. Arvind Shenoi and Dr. Mohit Singhal. This was the most dreadful time of our life where we had to see our little one, our life, in NICU.  I can’t thank enough the NICU nurses and doctors - how they took care of my baby and also supported me emotionally. Although, I had a C section, I was walking the very next day. The recovery time was very short due to highly efficient staff and technology in Cloudnine.

My baby’s blood sugar became stable and on 06 Dec 2012 we brought her home.

Today Divyanshi, as we call our angel, is all well and growing fine like any other child. All thanks to Cloudnine and their wonderful service. I agree that Cloudnine is “BIRTHING & BEYOND”.

All the best and continue the great work of delivering happiness.

My Biggest learning in life: A day without learning is a day without light

I have heard several times in the past ‘To learn is the basis and root of success’. Today, thanks to my professional experience at Cloudnine, I understand this better and agree. I have learnt to be a better person today, be it in a personal capacity or a corporate capacity.

I believe a job doesn’t have to be dull if you choose it not to be. My work every day presents me with the opportunity to learn, that I benefit from.  By working in an environment that promotes and nurtures growth, Cloudnine has given me a chance not just to learn but to also experiment and practice. Working closely with mothers to be, I enjoy being a part of a miracle such as child birth. This has made me more being forward focused and customer centric. I have learnt not just to delight a customer, but to add to the magic of the entire experience. In my view this helps in also eliminating any or all fears that a mother might have. Being in this type of environment has helped me flourish into a professional and individual who builds and grows a culture based on a core DNA of TRUST.By constantly having the chance to develop and shape my skills I have been successful in building strong bridges with customers to emerge not just as a PUBLC RELATIONS OFFICER, but to be a friend to them. Being part of a group of likeminded peers has given me a level of professional and personal maturity that I am confident will help me in every step of my life. Adaptability to a new days challenge whether crisis management of risk elimination has become part of my key leadership skills. Working closely with the leadership team has demonstrated the importance of an OPEN, approachable corporate culture. Instead of existing in silos, coming together with the entire team to jointly focus and develop a common goal is a great example of corporate cultures that actually make for a winning recipe. However I wouldn’t be a complete professional if didn’t share all these learnings with my own team and peers, sharing knowledge has become a critical aspect to my KEY Skills.

Recently I was presented the opportunity to make use of all these learnings I have been gifted, planning my parents 60thbirthday. Planning a day like this is not a task to be taken lightly. More than just being a birthday, a 60th birthday makes it all the more important. However I was faced with an opportunity to put all my learnings into practice, and while this was more of a subconscious action, I found that through my experience of adaptability, crisis management, customer focused, planning etc. So much so that my parents were extremely proud of the party I put together. Moments like these are truly priceless, and I have to thank my work experiences for this. I would like to thank Dr. Kishore Kumar and Mrs. Vidya Kumar, who have been a great inspiration for me and have always challenged me to try harder and better. Never being satisfied with the status quo is what has driven them to be the success they are, and I thank them for teaching me some of these values…

I also would like to thank my family and husband for their continued support.

Of Love, Courage & Resilience: Rashmi’s Story

I was the happiest person on earth when I found out I was pregnant. I was suffering from PCOS and I conceived after 3 long years of trying.

But my pregnancy was not smooth. I faced many issues. I had heavy bleeding at the end of 2 months and we were completely devastated. But then Dr. Prakash Kini send me in for an ultrasound and confirmed that there was no problems with the baby, and that the baby was doing perfectly fine. He also confirmed that I had a low lying placenta and long hours of sitting (my job demands this) was causing the bleeding. He asked me to take complete bed rest and I tried to follow the same. All was going well but when I was in my 26th week of pregnancy, things went out of control and there was no other option other than delivering the baby. Dr. Kini was always supportive and tried his best to control the situation and took the best decision in the interest of the baby.

My baby had arrived and I was really worried about him. He was so tiny. Then Dr. Nandini met us and she explained the situation and instilled confidence in us.  Later we met Dr Girish and Dr. Kishore and the discussions with them boosted our confidence and hopes of taking our baby home. We spent close to 3 months in NICU. Our baby went through tough times related to breathing difficulties but with the experts like Dr. Kishore, Dr. Girish and Dr. Nandini, no problem seemed insolvable. They gave their best to help my baby. They were supportive, cooperative and gave us all the information about the treatment. Their positivity was a Plus. The staff at NICU were equally supportive and cooperated with us at all times.

My baby is doing good and we are really happy we chose Cloudnine and really thankful that they gave us our sweetest gift ever. We are extremely thankful to Dr. Kishore who has been our guide even post discharge from NICU. Pregnancy is a stressful time, especially when you have a premature baby like we did, and having the support and guidance of experts like Dr. Kishore really helped us get through this difficult time.

Thanks Cloudnine!

A message from our Founder and Managing Director on World Parents of Premies Day

Sunday, March 10th, was World Parents of Premies Day. Having a premature baby is very daunting, more so in countries like India where there is no support network for parents of premature babies. Also, the understanding of the concept of prematurity is lacking in a majority of the population. Premature babies belong to 3 categories. The first group is late premature babies (between 34 and 37 weeks) who stay for a day or two in the hospital and most of them do well with no major problems. Coping with these premature babies is relatively easy as many parents don’t even realize the prematurity apart from the fact that some babies have a higher chance of contracting jaundice, which requires treatment.

The second group of prematurity is babies born between 31 and 34 weeks, who end up needing a week or sometimes two weeks in the hospital and most parents don’t have issues coping with them either. The third group (we call them extremely premature babies) are babies born between 24 to 30 weeks - these are the REAL premature babies with lots of potential problems and possible complications. They need critical care - they will need to spend anywhere between 5 to 10 weeks in the hospital. This requires a lot of mental, emotional and financial support for the family to cope with the unexpected. The parents typically go through emotions in 5 stages: Why me? (the guilt phase), then anger phase where they try to blame someone - either the family or the doctor; third phase is when the reality sinks in - when they accept the truth - and fourth phase is when they come to terms and cope. They become anxious about the future. The fifth phase is when they keep wondering why, when, whom to tell and is the future ok for my child…..and start enjoying the baby. We, at Cloudnine, understand the trauma a family goes through when they have a premature baby, and we work to help them cope with this transition. We really appreciate and support this ‘Parents of Premature Babies Day” initiative by Graham’s Foundation to help raise awareness of the issue and provide much-needed support to these parents.

I must say that I am really pleased with the hospital’s services.
At the early stage of pregnancy, there were some complications, but Dr. Praveena Shenoi’s a name, that fills lights in our lives. She does some magic and all went fine. A big thanks to her.

Home based toning exercises can be quite effective for you

If the thought of going to a gym and lifting weights is overwhelming, then there is a good news for you from the American National Osteoporosis Foundation. As per this, women can build strong bones and tone muscles right at home. Doing muscle-strengthening exercises using your own body as resistance is as effective as lifting weights in the prevention of osteoporosis.

With basic household supplies and furniture, you can perform a full-body workout. Follow a home workout schedule just like you would at the gym, exercising most days of the week, while allowing a day of rest between strength training routines.

Jumping Rope exercise

If you want to blast the fat off and tone your entire body, then rope-jump exercise is a good option for a home-based cardio.

When you jump rope, head outdoors or choose a room with high ceilings and enough space to accommodate the swinging rope. Jump one to two inches off the floor to clear the rope, keeping your elbows toward your sides as you swing the rope around your body. Jumping rope is an intense form of cardiovascular exercise, so make sure you rest as needed, performing cardio intervals until you build enough stamina to jump for extended periods of time.

Calisthenics

Body weight exercises, or calisthenics, challenge your musculature system. Benefits of doing calisthenics on a regular basis include body fat reduction and an increase in muscular strength and endurance. Examples include push-ups, squats, lunges, the plank, single-leg squats and jumping lunges.

To do a squat, stand up straight and widen your feet to shoulder-width. Bend your knees slightly, brace your abdominal muscles and place your hands on your hips. Stick your hips out behind you, stack your knees on top of your ankles and lower your hips 90 degrees. Push up through your heels to standing. As a beginner, start with 4 to 5 squats, and you can add a couple of them every subsequent week.

› Explore the vibrant side of your womanhood through these inspiring stories of mothers who were pregnant.

Seema was sent back from the hospital twice and was told to come when she was “keeled over” and unable to talk. So she sucked up the pain and kept herself busy, helping her mother-in-law in simple house-hold chores and by watching TV. The whole night passed anxiously but in the morning her husband Venu had to rush her mother-in-law to a casualty-hospital nearby, who unfortunately slipped on the stairs and was bleeding profusely. Seema was all alone in those moments of anxiety but unnerved.

Even though her contractions weren’t five minutes apart, showing great courage she called the doctor at 7:30 A.M and managed to say, “Baby… now!” The doctor who knew her number was way too far to reach her but informed the nursing-home to urgently send the help. Her husband called home to check and with no response from Seema, rushed home anticipating the emergency, Seema dragged herself into the bedroom and held onto the cot to brace herself.

Just as the baby was crowning, the ambulance arrived behind her husband. After couple of pushes, Tanush, Seema’s first son was born on the floor amidst tears of joy.
